********************************************************** ROTARIANS, DO YOU KNOW? Joliet's first settler in 1831 was Charles Reed. The first boat arrived on the canal on April 11, 1848. Joliet shipped its limestone as far as New York, and our quarries provided material for such structures as the Rock Island Arsenal, the Indiana Penitentiary, and the State House and Lincoln monument at Springfield. Joliet Wall Paper mills produced as much as one third of the country's wall paper. Taken from the Will County Historical Society Summer 2020 Quarterly newsletter.
