At the March 10, 2015 luncheon, 27 Joliet area students were recognized for their participation in the 19th annual Rotary Club of Joliet’s Youth Conference. The purpose of this conference is to offer an opportunity for students from Joliet’s three high schools to learn and network with leaders in the local community.

According to Mary Jaworski, Joliet Rotarian and coordinator of the seminar, this year’s conference addressed key information in the areas of communications, leadership, decision making, and ethical issues.

“The 2015 Rotary Youth Conference was a resounding success, with 27 outstanding students from our three Joliet High Schools,” Jaworski said.  “The students had the opportunity to speak with and hear from 16 of the area’s top leaders in the fields of business, education, government, health care and communications.  The quality of the students that participated clearly reveals that our community’s future is in great hands.”

Speakers at this year’s conference were Silver Cross Hospital Chief Operating Officer Mary Bakken, Will County Associate Judge Dinah Archambeault, Will County Deputy Treasurer Brian McDaniel, Lora McGuire on behalf of Illinois State Senator Pat McGuire, WJOL radio host Scott Slocum, retired Will County Chief Judge Steve White, retired Joliet Junior College President J.D. Ross, and Joliet Rotarians Michael Hennessey, Ken Mihelich, Kate Schott, Debbie Condotti, Brian Benton, Brother James GaffneyTom Thanas, Neil McManus, Dr. Charles Coleman. From District Governor Nicki Scott:

I appeal to all Rotarians in our District to join together in celebrating our year of “Light Up Rotary” at the District Conference April 23-26th in Davenport, Iowa.  We need to take time to celebrate all that we do in Rotary, be inspired by sharing ideas and listening to amazing keynote speakers as well as simply enjoy each others’ company.

If you have not been to a conference before you are missing the magic that happens when multiple Rotarians from many clubs gather in one place.  To add to the excitement this year we are bringing together two Districts so there will be even more people to learn from and we are able to leverage our dollars to bring you more bang for your buck.  One key benefit is the high caliber of Keynote Speakers including internationally renowned John O’Leary and incoming Rotary International Director Jennifer Jones.  In addition to inspiring plenaries and informative workshops we are placing a heavy emphasis on being family inclusive so please bring your families as there is plenty to do and we are wrapping the conference around some fun free time opportunities - organized options as well as other choices:  Quad Cities Activities.

Davenport is a great location on the banks of the Mississippi and we have two hotels to choose from. We are already 80% booked at the Blackhawk so act quickly if you want that hotel. BLACKHAWK HOTEL.  or  the RADDISON Quad City Plaza.   Two great venues attached to the convention center and walking distance to super city fun.

To summarize here is what I am asking you to do:

  1. REGISTER FOR THE CONFERENCE, THEN PICK YOUR HOTEL.
  2. THEN REGISTER FOR THURSDAY NIGHT'S FOUNDATION DINNER.
  3. Register for extracurricular activities that you may be interested in - Information will be available on this soon.

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible there!  Remember your club has been billed for the President Elect to attend conference so it makes sense that we get at least one representative from each club even if the PE is unable to attend but bring a few and I assure you it will pay dividends for your club!

Don't forget!  The application for members to nominate a potential new Joliet Rotary Club member, is available in the DOWNLOAD FILES section of the e-Wheel newsletter and the Joliet Rotary Club website at www.jolietrotary.com
