Joliet West High School’s Students of Service (SOS) recently formed an Interact Club with the Rotary Club of Joliet in order to work hand-in-hand on service projects for the community. At a recent Joliet Rotary meeting Joliet West students, Asha Reynolds, Haley Salazar, Anthony Schalk, and Frank Spesia sold 50/50 raffle tickets to club members with half of the proceeds going toward a new tee-shirt design for their student club.

“This was a great way for the students to get to know Joliet Rotarians, while having an opportunity to raise money for new shirts,” said Dan Milelich, president of Joliet Rotary. “As a service club, we are proud to join together with the Interact Club - and are very excited to work with these dedicated students to make even more of a difference in the community.”

During the 2009-2010 school year, SOS formally became an Interact Club with the Joliet Rotary. Students have not only provided service at Joliet West, but in the community as well. They’ve held a school-wide collection of hygiene and food products for Daybreak Shelter and volunteered at local nursing homes.

More recently, the students packaged food for third-world countries with the Feed My Starving Children organization, hosted a Cancer Awareness Week collecting donations for the American Cancer Society (ACS), and participated in Relay for Life raising over $1800.00 for ACS.

Their first event of the new school year included the collection of backpacks with school supplies for children in need.
